Raging wildfires throughout Los Angeles County have caused widespread school closures, with significant damage reported at three schools in Pacific Palisades. A spokesperson for the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) confirmed damage to Palisades Charter High School, Palisades Charter Elementary School, and Marquez Elementary School due to the intense fires.
Visuals from KTTV, a Fox News affiliate, depicted Palisades Charter Elementary School engulfed in flames. The LAUSD is collaborating with emergency responders and officials to evaluate the situation and formulate plans to minimize disruptions to student learning. The LA County Office of Education reports that at least 24 school districts have implemented full or partial closures.
Alhambra Unified School District Superintendent Denise Jaramillo issued a statement indicating the need for additional time to conduct safety inspections of schools. Jaramillo also noted the anticipated persistence of poor air quality due to smoke and dust. A considerable number of district staff are under evacuation orders, which will affect staffing and school operations. Several Southern California school districts, including Burbank Unified, Glendale Unified, La Cañada Unified, and Pasadena Unified, have announced closures extending through Friday. The LAUSD plans to reassess the situation and announce a decision regarding Friday classes on Thursday.
