Kamala Harris' Team Reflects on Media Outreach Challenges After Election

Created: JANUARY 25, 2025

Following the recent election, senior members of Vice President Kamala Harris' campaign team have openly discussed the difficulties they faced in securing appearances on popular non-traditional media platforms. In a revealing interview on the "Pod Save America" podcast, Senior Adviser Stephanie Cutter disclosed that their request to feature Harris on the widely popular "Hot Ones" YouTube show was declined. The show, known for its celebrity interviews conducted while eating progressively spicier chicken wings, reportedly avoids political content, explaining their decision to decline both Harris and former President Trump.

This revelation comes as the Harris campaign reflects on its media strategy, which aimed to connect with younger voters through online platforms. Cutter admitted that the campaign encountered similar resistance from other non-traditional media outlets hesitant to engage with political figures. This contrasted with Trump's successful appearances on shows like "The Joe Rogan Experience," which garnered significantly more views than Harris' appearance on the "Call Her Daddy" podcast.

The campaign team also addressed the speculation surrounding Harris' absence from Joe Rogan's podcast. While Cutter maintained that both sides were eager to schedule an interview, logistical challenges and conflicts with Trump's appearance on the same show ultimately prevented it from happening. She reiterated Harris' willingness to participate and attributed the scheduling difficulties to the timing of Trump's interview. Rogan, however, has previously stated that Harris had multiple opportunities to appear on his show.

These post-election reflections highlight the evolving media landscape and the challenges political figures face in navigating non-traditional platforms to reach broader audiences. The campaign's experiences underscore the differing receptions Harris and Trump received from these outlets and raise questions about the role of politics in online entertainment.
