A recent Senate report reveals that both the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) disregarded substantial intelligence pointing to the true scale of the protests planned for January 6, 2021. The Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee's report, released Tuesday, concludes that these agencies downplayed or overlooked plans by certain right-wing groups in advance of the Capitol breach.
Senator Gary Peters, the Democratic chairman of the committee, attributed the failure to a lack of foresight in recognizing the credible threat of a Capitol breach. He cited an example of one tip received by law enforcement warning that the Proud Boys intended to "literally kill people."
Many threats preceding the event, such as calls for Trump supporters to "come armed" and "burn the place to the ground," were dismissed by officials as online exaggeration. However, this assessment proved inaccurate in some instances.

Senator John Kennedy, a Republican from Louisiana, responded to the report on Fox News, advocating for an independent investigation into the events of January 6th. He criticized the House Democrats' investigation as a "partisan car wreck" that presented only a partial account, excluding Republican perspectives. Kennedy emphasized the need for an objective, nonpartisan examination by external experts to provide the American public with a complete understanding.

Kennedy, who was present at the Capitol on January 6th, described the events as an "abomination" and stressed the public's right to know why it happened and whether the government had prior knowledge and failed to adequately prepare. He expressed frustration with the politicization of the issue and called for transparency from the Justice Department, Congressional leadership, and the FBI.
Kennedy believes that regaining public trust requires these institutions to be truthful with the American people.
