Two individuals disrupted a first-round men's singles match at Wimbledon on Wednesday by running onto Court 18 and scattering orange confetti and jigsaw puzzle pieces. The disruption, attributed to Just Stop Oil activists, resulted in their arrest on charges of aggravated trespass and criminal damage, according to Wimbledon officials.

The environmental activist group, Just Stop Oil, claimed responsibility for the incident, releasing a video and statement explaining their motivation. They highlighted the Met Office's confirmation of June 2023 as the hottest on record and criticized Wimbledon's sponsorship deal with Barclays, citing the bank's financial support of oil and gas companies.

The match between Sho Shimabukuro and Grigor Dimitrov was briefly paused due to the protest and later experienced further delays because of inclement weather. Just Stop Oil's statement specifically called out Barclays' investments in companies like ExxonMobil, Shell, and TotalEnergies.

This protest occurred just days after Wimbledon organizers announced increased security measures aimed at preventing environmental demonstrations. All England Club Chief Executive Sally Bolton had previously expressed confidence in their security protocols, acknowledging the possibility of disruptions but emphasizing their preparedness.
