Following Ohio State's national championship victory, quarterback Devin Brown has decided to transfer to the University of California, Berkeley. Brown served as a backup to Will Howard during the Buckeyes' championship run, culminating in their win against Notre Dame on Monday night. He officially entered the transfer portal in December but remained with the team throughout the playoffs.

Brown's time at Ohio State saw him playing second fiddle to two different quarterbacks. In 2023, he lost the starting role to Kyle McCord and again found himself as a backup in 2024 with the arrival of Kansas State transfer Will Howard. His limited playing time included a single start in the 2023 Cotton Bowl, which was unfortunately cut short due to injury. He primarily saw action in late-game situations when the outcome was already decided.

At Cal, Brown is anticipated to compete with freshman Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele for the starting quarterback position. He has two years of eligibility left. While Will Howard, the offensive MVP of the championship game, is moving on, Ohio State is expected to start five-star recruit Julian Sayin in 2025. This likely influenced Brown's decision to seek opportunities elsewhere.

Cal finished the previous season with a 6-7 record in their inaugural year in the ACC. Brown was a highly touted prospect, ranked No. 81 in ESPN's Top 300 recruits for the class of 2022.
