House GOP Veterans Rally Behind Hegseth's Defense Secretary Nomination

Created: JANUARY 25, 2025

Over thirty Republican House members with military backgrounds have publicly endorsed Pete Hegseth, President-elect Trump's nominee for Secretary of Defense, urging a fair confirmation process based on merit.

In a letter spearheaded by Rep. August Pfluger of Texas and addressed to Senate Majority Leader John Thune and Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, the lawmakers emphasized Hegseth's military service, academic qualifications, and strategic vision for national defense. They called for an evaluation focused on substance, not recent allegations.

Hegseth's nomination has faced scrutiny due to past allegations of misconduct, including drinking and sexual harassment, as well as claims of mismanagement at a veterans' non-profit. While Hegseth has denied mistreating women, he did settle financially with one accuser. He has pledged to abstain from alcohol if confirmed.

Despite the controversy, Hegseth's nomination has gained momentum thanks to vocal support from President-elect Trump, behind-the-scenes lobbying by Vice President-elect Sen. JD Vance, and Hegseth's own proactive engagement.

Rep. August Pfluger

Rep. Pfluger highlighted Hegseth's communication skills and ability to navigate complex institutional landscapes, asserting that these qualities would be vital for effective leadership at the Department of Defense. He praised Hegseth as a strategic thinker capable of streamlining bureaucracy and modernizing the military.

Pfluger, a two-decade Air Force veteran with combat experience and National Security Council service under Trump, argued that Hegseth represents the necessary strategic shift for the nation's defense infrastructure. He emphasized the need for an unconventional yet qualified leader who can drive modernization and maintain America's military dominance.

Rep. Mike Waltz

Among the co-signers is Rep. Michael Waltz of Florida, Trump's choice for national security advisor in his second term. Waltz, a decorated Green Beret and the first Special Forces member elected to Congress, brings significant military experience to the endorsement effort. Other signatories include a long list of House Republicans with military service records.
