Washington State Receives Million in Federal Funding for Infrastructure Projects

Created: JANUARY 27, 2025

Washington State is set to receive approximately $130 million in federal funding for various infrastructure improvements. This funding, allocated from President Biden's $1 trillion infrastructure plan, will support projects ranging from enhancing tribal relocation efforts to repairing a storm-damaged marina.

A significant portion of the funding, around $25 million, will be used to construct a nearly four-mile loop road for the Shoalwater Bay Indian Tribe. This road will facilitate the tribe's relocation to higher ground, addressing the impacts of rising sea levels and enabling future development.

Another crucial project receiving support is the replacement of the Port Orchard Marina's breakwater. Damaged in a storm and nearing the end of its lifespan, the breakwater is vital for protecting marina facilities, tribal fishing vessels, ferry services, emergency response boats, and the sole marine fuel station within a 16-mile radius. The $9.4 million in federal funding will cover over half of the $15.7 million replacement cost.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg

U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, along with other officials, visited the Port Orchard marina to announce the funding. He emphasized the importance of investing in resilient infrastructure to protect communities from the increasing threats of climate change and severe weather events.

In addition to these projects, $17 million will be allocated to building recreational trails connecting Bainbridge Island to the Pacific Coast at La Push, further enhancing the state's infrastructure and promoting outdoor recreation.

Washington Governor Jay Inslee, also present at the announcement, addressed concerns about the state's ferry system, which has faced challenges due to staffing shortages, vessel repairs, and COVID-19 outbreaks. He assured the public that efforts are underway to modernize and electrify the ferry system, with new boats being built and contracts in place for their construction.
