Following the intense backlash he received for his hit on Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence, Houston Texans linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair issued a statement on Monday morning. The hit resulted in a concussion for Lawrence and sparked controversy, with some criticizing Al-Shaair's pro-Palestinian cleats he wore during the game.

Al-Shaair maintained that he plays with intensity but never intends to injure another player. He emphasized his focus on hitting hard while hoping his opponent can continue playing. He explained that he didn't see Lawrence sliding until it was too late, given the rapid pace of the game. He offered a sincere apology to Lawrence, recalling a pre-game conversation where he expressed his admiration for Lawrence's return to the field and wished him well. Al-Shaair also acknowledged the Jaguars' players' right to defend their teammate.

Addressing the criticism he faced, Al-Shaair pushed back against those he felt were quick to label him a villain, including reporters and fans who made racist and Islamophobic remarks. He asserted that his intentions are known to God and those close to him.
The hit led to Al-Shaair's ejection from the game, which the Texans ultimately won 23-20. It also triggered a brawl resulting in the ejection of Jaguars cornerback Jarrian Jones. Several Jaguars players publicly condemned Al-Shaair's actions, describing the hit as "dirty." Lawrence subsequently updated his condition on social media, indicating he was home and recovering.
