German Conservatives Triumph in National Election, Trump Celebrates

Created: JANUARY 24, 2025

Former President Donald Trump expressed his enthusiasm following the victory of Friedrich Merz, leader of Germany's conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU), in the recent national election, unseating incumbent Chancellor Olaf Scholz. Trump congratulated Merz and the German people via Truth Social, highlighting the public's discontent with existing policies, particularly concerning energy and immigration.

Exit polls indicate that the CDU secured the largest share of the vote, with the right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD) coming in second. This snap election was called amidst concerns over immigration and economic downturn. Merz is anticipated to adopt stricter immigration policies compared to his predecessor, although not as stringent as those advocated by the AfD.

German exit polls show opposition leader Friedrich Merz’s conservatives leading in the election.

While Merz needs to forge a coalition to govern, he has explicitly ruled out partnering with the AfD. His 15-point plan to address immigration includes reinforced border security and deportation of individuals whose asylum applications have been rejected. Despite being excluded from the potential coalition, the AfD significantly increased its vote share compared to the previous election.

The AfD, which received endorsements from both Trump and Elon Musk, views this election as a springboard for future success, particularly in the upcoming 2029 election.
