Arizona AG Vows to Oppose Trump's Immigration Policies

Created: JANUARY 26, 2025

Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes has firmly stated her opposition to several of former President Trump's key immigration policies, particularly regarding DACA recipients and the potential construction of deportation centers. In an interview with The Guardian, Mayes expressed her commitment to protecting Dreamers, individuals benefiting from the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, from deportation. She called any attempts to deport them a "bright red line" and vowed to use all legal means to prevent such actions. Mayes also criticized the idea of building deportation centers, which she previously referred to as "concentration camps," stating such plans would be unacceptable in Arizona.

The DACA program, based on the DREAM Act, has been a subject of political debate for years. While the DREAM Act has been reintroduced multiple times, it has yet to become law. Former President Obama implemented DACA, borrowing elements from the proposed legislation. Trump's attempts to dismantle DACA were previously blocked by the Supreme Court.

Mayes expressed confidence in the courts ultimately upholding the protections for Dreamers. She also acknowledged the concerns about border security and the fentanyl crisis, suggesting that resources should be directed towards increasing Border Patrol presence and prosecuting individuals connected to cartels, rather than deploying the National Guard for deportations, as Trump proposed. Mayes emphasized the importance of due process and individual rights, highlighting the united front she shares with the Attorneys General of New Mexico and California on immigration issues, while noting the differing stance of the Texas Attorney General.

Mayes asserted that Arizonans did not vote to disregard constitutional rights when they voted for Trump. Fox News reached out to Trump's team and Arizona's Republican congressional delegation for comment but did not receive a response.
