Crystal Hefner, widow of Playboy publisher Hugh Hefner, is pulling back the curtain on the darker aspects of life at the Playboy Mansion in her upcoming memoir, "Only Say Good Things: Surviving Playboy and Finding Myself." The book promises an unfiltered account of the objectification and misogyny that permeated the mansion's culture.
Crystal's memoir details the strict rules Hefner imposed on his girlfriends, controlling everything from their appearance to their curfews. Having met Hefner at a party when she was just 21, Crystal became engaged to the 85-year-old in 2010. Despite a brief break-up just before their planned 2011 wedding, they reconciled and married in 2012, remaining together until Hefner's passing in 2017.
The memoir describes Crystal's experience navigating the hierarchical system among Hefner's girlfriends, feeling pressured to compete for his attention. She recounts the allure of the Playboy lifestyle, with its international travel and Hollywood parties, juxtaposed with its darker underbelly. Crystal's journey involved grappling with external criticism of her relationship and seeking to reclaim her self-worth after feeling diminished by the mansion's toxic environment.
In an interview with the Daily Mail, Crystal characterized her relationship with Hefner as "complicated," explaining that she felt compelled to protect him despite the way she was treated. She views her book as a testament to personal growth and embracing her truth.
This perspective contrasts with Crystal's earlier statements in 2018, shortly after Hefner's death, where she expressed gratitude for the love, kindness, and opportunities he provided.
