Former "Real Housewives of New York City" star Luann de Lesseps recently shared her unique approach to maintaining her physique at 59. In a conversation with Fox News Digital, the television personality and cabaret performer, currently on her Countess Cabaret Tour, highlighted three key strategies.
De Lesseps' first tip, gleaned from her experiences at Austrian spas, emphasizes avoiding beverages while eating. She explains that digestion begins in the mouth, and drinking during meals dilutes digestive enzymes and hinders the metabolic process. She contrasts European habits of sipping wine with American tendencies towards large, cold drinks, suggesting the former contributes to better weight management. De Lesseps recommends drinking water 20 minutes before and after meals instead.
Portion control and mindful eating are also crucial, according to de Lesseps. She advocates for savoring each bite and chewing thoroughly, allowing the brain to register fullness and prevent overeating. She also champions intermittent fasting, specifically recommending a late morning meal and avoiding food after 6 p.m. to prevent digestion from disrupting sleep.
Surprisingly, de Lesseps advises against consuming salads after 6 p.m. She explains that the high water content in salads can, similar to drinking during meals, dilute digestive juices, particularly when combined with dressings and toppings. She suggests cooked vegetables as a healthier evening alternative.
Finally, de Lesseps stresses the importance of regular physical activity, whether it's a brisk walk, water aerobics, or a more intense workout like SoulCycle. She believes that consistent movement is essential for overall fitness. De Lesseps' current cabaret tour features her original music, including hits inspired by her time on "RHONYC," and covers of iconic artists like Tina Turner and Stevie Nicks.
