Two individuals squatting in a Bronx, New York public housing unit have been indicted on multiple charges, including kidnapping, unlawful imprisonment, and child endangerment. Stephanie Grabowski, 40, and Mark Russel, 45, allegedly subjected Grabowski's two young daughters, ages 4 and 5, to appalling conditions within the New York City Housing Authority’s Mitchel Houses.
The apartment, described by authorities as a "house of horrors," was reportedly filled with urine, feces, and dirty diapers. The children were found naked, bruised, and sitting on a soiled mattress in a room allegedly locked from the outside. Officials stated that the apartment lacked basic necessities like food and clothing, and the children exhibited signs of severe neglect and abuse, including bruising, rashes, and difficulty walking and speaking. Upon discovering the girls' condition, authorities immediately transported them to the Children’s Advocacy Center for evaluation and subsequently to Jacobi Medical Center for further medical attention.
Bronx District Attorney Darcel Clark expressed outrage at the situation, emphasizing the severity of the alleged abuse and neglect. Police rescued the girls on May 3rd when the apartment was scheduled for vacancy due to its known squatter status. Grabowski and Russell were arrested on May 27th following a grand jury indictment.
Grabowski is currently being held at Rikers Island, while Russell is detained at the Vernon C. Bain Center. Their next court appearances are scheduled for September 13th and July 27th, respectively.
