Created: JANUARY 24, 2025

A California couple's dream honeymoon in Hawaii took a devastating turn when the groom drowned while snorkeling, and opportunistic thieves compounded the tragedy by stealing their belongings, including their rental car.

49-year-old Steven Phan and his wife, Brittany, were enjoying the waters off Electric Beach on June 1st when the incident occurred. A spear fisherman pulled Phan's body ashore, and beachgoers administered CPR until emergency services arrived. Despite their efforts, Phan was later pronounced dead at a local hospital, as reported by KHON.

The heartbreaking situation worsened when, as Brittany desperately watched attempts to revive her husband, thieves absconded with all their possessions left on the beach. A GoFundMe page established to assist with funeral expenses and other costs details the shocking theft, stating that their cell phones, wallets, money, clothing, and even their rental vehicle were taken. The fundraiser has garnered over $21,000 as of this writing.

Steven and Brittany were married on March 20th, just three months before this tragic event. The GoFundMe page describes Steven as a devoted friend and husband who will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

In response to this incident and public outcry, Honolulu City Councilmember Andrea Tupola has announced that a lifeguard stand and necessary staffing will be added to Electric Beach in the coming months, according to KHON. Honolulu police are currently investigating the theft and auto theft connected to this case.
