Cheney Targets Trump, Vance, and Musk Over Ukraine Stance in Fundraising Appeal

Created: JANUARY 05, 2025

Former Wyoming Representative Liz Cheney is capitalizing on the fallout from last Friday's contentious Oval Office meeting concerning Ukraine, using the incident to fuel a fundraising campaign. The meeting, which involved President Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, left international allies concerned.

Cheney's organization, Our Great Task, sent an email to potential donors labeling Trump, Vance, and business leader Elon Musk as "Kremlin instruments." The message criticizes leaders in Washington for their reluctance to uphold core American values and institutions. It directly points to Trump's stance on the Ukraine conflict, accusing him of siding with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The email highlights historical context, emphasizing America's role in defeating the Soviet Union and supporting global freedom and security since World War II. It contrasts this with what Cheney perceives as Trump's appeasement of Putin's aggression against Ukraine.

The planned minerals deal between the U.S. and Ukraine, intended to grant the U.S. access to Kyiv's rare earth mineral reserves, remains unsigned after the meeting. The discussion reportedly deteriorated, with Trump accusing Zelenskyy of escalating tensions towards a global conflict. Zelenskyy sought stronger security assurances, a demand that U.S. officials deemed unreasonable. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick publicly criticized Zelenskyy's requests as outlandish.

The incident has further divided Republicans regarding aid to Ukraine. Representative Don Bacon likened Trump and Vance's position to historical Democratic stances on Soviet appeasement, arguing that the U.S. is now misaligned in the conflict. Other Republicans, such as Representatives Mike Lawler and Brian Fitzpatrick, expressed concern about Russia's perceived advantage but stopped short of blaming Trump. Senator Lindsey Graham, a Trump ally and Ukraine supporter, commended Trump's approach and suggested Zelenskyy should step down.

Cheney's fundraising appeal concludes with a plea for donations to support candidates who embody courage and integrity, aiming to demonstrate the strength of those committed to preserving freedom.
