Created: JANUARY 25, 2025

NBA icon Charles Barkley has updated his will in response to the Supreme Court's decision to overturn affirmative action in college admissions. The court's 6-3 ruling, which deemed race-based admissions unconstitutional, has sparked widespread debate and criticism.

Following the ruling, Barkley pledged $5 million to his alma mater, Auburn University, with the intention of promoting diversity within the student body. He expressed his concerns to friends, emphasizing the importance of ensuring Black students continue to have a place at Auburn. Currently, Black students comprise just over 5% of the university's enrollment.

Barkley's move comes amid a wave of reactions against the Supreme Court's decision. President Biden criticized the ruling, arguing that it deviates from established precedent that allowed race as one factor among many in admissions decisions.

The NAACP condemned the ruling as "hate-inspired" and a setback for diversity and inclusion. They emphasized the ongoing significance of race in shaping the experiences of Black Americans and vowed to continue advocating for equitable practices in education and employment.
