Legendary actor Robert De Niro, along with family and close friends, gathered on Friday to mourn the loss of his 19-year-old grandson, Leandro De Niro Rodriguez. The funeral service, held at the Frank E. Campbell Funeral Chapel in Manhattan, followed a wake on Thursday.
Among those present were De Niro's partner, Tiffany Chen, their three-month-old daughter, Gia, and Leandro's parents, Drena De Niro and Carlos Rodriguez. Notable figures from the entertainment world, including Christopher Walken, Harvey Keitel, and Michael Imperioli, also attended to offer their support.
Leandro's mother, Drena, first shared the news of his passing on Sunday in a heartfelt Instagram post. She expressed her profound love for her son and the immense pain of his loss.
Robert De Niro issued a statement expressing his deep distress and requesting privacy for the family to grieve. Drena later revealed in an Instagram comment that Leandro's death was linked to pills laced with fentanyl, alleging that someone knowingly sold him the contaminated drugs.
The Frank E. Campbell Funeral Chapel, a historic venue, has hosted services for numerous prominent figures, including Jackie Kennedy Onassis, John Lennon, and Judy Garland. Authorities responded to a 911 call on July 2nd where Leandro was found unresponsive and later pronounced dead. The medical examiner's office will determine the official cause of death.
While the investigation is ongoing, a representative for the De Niro family stated that no further comments would be made at this time.
