Several Missouri lawmakers are drafting legislation to dedicate sections of state highways to former President Donald Trump. One ambitious proposal aims to name numerous stretches of Missouri's highway system after Trump by August, excluding roads within St. Louis, Columbia, and Kansas City. This bill, sponsored by State Senator Mary Elizabeth Coleman, echoes her unsuccessful 2021 attempt to rename a part of Interstate 55 the "Donald J. Trump Highway."
A separate bill by State Senator Nick Schroer seeks to christen a portion of Route D west of St. Louis as the "President Donald J. Trump Highway." Schroer enthusiastically announced his proposal on social media, proclaiming, "It's time to Make Missouri Roads Great Again." Both bills stipulate that while the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) would handle signage, the costs would be covered by private funds.
In 2021, Coleman justified her initial proposal by highlighting Trump's contributions to Missouri's economy and his upholding of conservative values. This isn't the first time Missouri lawmakers have sought to honor prominent conservatives; past efforts include an attempt to declare January 12th "Rush Limbaugh Day."
Naming highways after Trump has precedent outside Missouri, with stretches of road dedicated to him in states like Oklahoma and Virginia. A park in New York, Donald J. Trump State Park, also bears his name, although its current state of upkeep has been a point of contention, with some New York Democrats pushing to rename it.
