Created: JANUARY 24, 2025

Amidst ongoing controversy surrounding his song "Try That In A Small Town," country music star Jason Aldean has found a staunch defender in South Dakota's Republican Governor, Kristi Noem. The governor voiced her support for Aldean on social media, joining a chorus of conservatives pushing back against criticism of the song and its accompanying music video.

Governor Noem expressed her disbelief at the attempts to "cancel" Aldean and his beliefs, praising him and his wife, Brittany, for their outspokenness regarding law enforcement and patriotism. She shared her gratitude for the couple's stance in a video posted to Twitter.

The controversy stems from accusations that the song, which warns against disrespecting law enforcement and the American flag, contains racial undertones. Critics have taken issue with the lyrics and the music video's imagery. Some have even gone so far as to label the song "pro-lynching." Country Music Television (CMT) has reportedly pulled the video from its rotation.

Aldean has vehemently denied these allegations, asserting that the song does not reference race and that the video clips used are from real news footage. He called the accusations "meritless and dangerous." He further explained that the song had been released months prior to the current controversy.

Governor Noem extended an invitation to Aldean to perform in South Dakota, even offering the front lawn of the governor's residence as a venue. She expressed her support for Aldean and the songwriters, stating her belief that they are being unfairly targeted for their views.
