A remarkable artifact from the RMS Titanic, a 20-pound chandelier that once graced the first-class smoking lounge, is now on display at the Liberty Science Center in Jersey City, New Jersey. This stunning piece, which survived decades on the ocean floor after the ship's tragic sinking, retains its original gold patina. It's a central piece of the "Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition," showcasing nearly 250 artifacts recovered from the wreck.
Tomasina Ray, president and collections director of RMS Titanic Inc., emphasized the chandelier's historical significance, noting its presence on the night of the sinking and its remarkable preservation despite its time underwater.
The exhibition offers visitors a unique immersive experience. Upon entry, guests receive a replica boarding pass, allowing them to step into the shoes of a Titanic passenger and trace the ship's journey from construction to its fateful demise. Reconstructed rooms and an interactive "iceberg" that allows visitors to experience the frigid temperatures of the fateful night further enhance the immersive experience.
Having already captivated over 35 million people worldwide, the exhibition recently concluded a successful run in Boston before arriving in Jersey City. The exhibit is open until September 1st and requires an additional $8 fee on top of general museum admission.
