Former Hamas Hostage Credits Fellow Captive with Saving Her Life

Created: JANUARY 27, 2025

Amit Soussana, a former Hamas hostage, has revealed harrowing details about her captivity, highlighting the crucial role another hostage played in her survival. In an interview with Israeli Channel 12's "Uvda," Soussana recounted how IDF soldier Liri Albag intervened when captors tied her up, beat her, and threatened her life, demanding she confess to being in the IDF. Albag, also kidnapped on October 7, 2023, convinced the captors that Soussana was not a soldier, an act Soussana believes saved her life. "I don’t know if they would have killed me or not; as far as I’m concerned, you saved my life," Soussana told Albag upon their release.

Soussana's ordeal began when Hamas terrorists abducted her from her home during the October 7 attacks. Forced to walk barefoot in her pajamas, she was beaten as she was taken to Gaza. She resisted her captors fiercely, hoping for rescue, but was ultimately taken captive. Soussana was released in November 2023 as part of a hostage exchange.

In March 2024, Soussana bravely came forward as the first Israeli woman to publicly disclose being sexually assaulted during her captivity. She shared her story with The New York Times and later testified before the UN Security Council, detailing the traumatic experience. During her captivity, Soussana was chained and had to ask permission to use the bathroom. She described the assault, recalling the terrorist's threatening demeanor and intrusive actions. She emphasized her helplessness and the emotional toll of being forced to suppress her grief after the assault.
