Sinclair's World Cup Record Bid in Jeopardy After Injury

Created: JANUARY 05, 2025

Canadian soccer icon Christine Sinclair's pursuit of a historic sixth World Cup goal hangs in the balance after she sustained an apparent leg injury. The 40-year-old captain was seen limping noticeably during Canada's 2-1 comeback victory against Ireland in Perth on Wednesday. Coach Bev Priestman confirmed post-game that Sinclair required medical assessment, stating, "I haven’t had a medical update yet. She looks like she was limping at the end there, so I’ll have to get an understanding of that and find out what comes next." As of Thursday, Canada Soccer had not provided further information on Sinclair's status.

This injury casts a shadow over Canada's crucial upcoming match against co-host Australia on Monday. Sinclair, who has yet to score in this tournament, missed a penalty kick in Canada's opening draw with Nigeria and began the Ireland match on the bench for the first time in her extensive international career. She entered the game at halftime, but despite two shots on goal, couldn't find the net. Her appearance alongside veteran teammates Sophie Schmidt and Shelina Zadorsky did, however, help stabilize the Canadian side and secure their first come-from-behind World Cup win in two decades. Priestman praised the veterans for their ability to "bring that quality" in critical moments. Sinclair's evolving role within the team has presented fresh challenges and leadership opportunities, inspiring younger players like midfielder Simi Awujo, who spoke of the humility and perseverance she's learned from Sinclair and Schmidt.

The potential record Sinclair is chasing – scoring in a sixth World Cup – remains elusive. Brazilian star Marta is also vying for this achievement and has another opportunity when Brazil faces France on Saturday. Both players debuted in the 2003 World Cup and have scored in every tournament since. Sinclair, the all-time leading international goal scorer with 190 goals, is determined to make her mark on the world stage. Goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan reinforced the team's unwavering support for Sinclair, stating, "We still want Sinc on our team every single time."
