Rhode Island Police Sergeant Faces Assault Charge for Alleged Attack on Handcuffed Man

A 17-year veteran of the Warwick, Rhode Island police department, Sergeant Britton Kelly, has been charged with simple assault. The charges stem from a July 15th incident where Kelly allegedly kicked and struck a handcuffed man in the back of a police cruiser. Kelly and other officers were responding to a domestic violence call and had arrested a woman. According to authorities, the woman's husband attempted to intervene, leading to his arrest and placement in the police vehicle. It was then that Kelly allegedly assaulted the man. The incident was reported by the Warwick Police Department to the state Attorney General's office, which conducted an investigation and subsequently filed the misdemeanor charge. Kelly was arraigned and released on personal recognizance. He has been suspended with pay and is due back in court on August 10th.
