Trump Considers Pardons for January 6th Participants

Created: JANUARY 25, 2025

In a recent interview, former President Donald Trump indicated he is contemplating pardons for individuals involved in the January 6th events. He stated his intention to review each case individually and act swiftly, potentially as early as his first day back in office. Trump expressed concern about the conditions of confinement for those currently incarcerated, describing the facilities as "filthy" and "disgusting." He has previously voiced this intention during his campaign.

The interview also touched on the possibility of President Biden issuing preemptive pardons to individuals such as Liz Cheney and Adam Schiff. Trump responded by suggesting that those involved in the January 6th committee should potentially face legal consequences themselves. However, when asked if he would direct his FBI director to pursue such actions, Trump stated he would instead prioritize energy independence ("drill, baby, drill").

The New York Times editorial board has cautioned that President Biden's pardon of his son, Hunter Biden, could create a precedent for Trump to pardon those involved in the January 6th events. They argue that while the offenses are not comparable in severity, Biden's action could complicate arguments against future potential abuses of the pardon power. President Biden's pardon of his son covered any potential offenses against the U.S. committed between January 1, 2014, and December 1, 2024. In his statement, Biden also accused the Department of Justice of unfairly targeting his son.
