Rep. Goldman Faces Backlash for Comments on Illegal Immigration and Law Enforcement

Created: JANUARY 25, 2025

Democratic Representative Dan Goldman has drawn criticism following remarks made during a House hearing concerning illegal immigration and its impact on law enforcement in Nassau County, New York. Goldman expressed his frustration with repeated hearings on the issue, stating he was "shocked" to be discussing the topic again and indicating a weariness of hearing from Nassau County officials.

Nassau County Police Commissioner Pat Ryder, who testified at the hearing, expressed his disappointment with Goldman's comments, describing them as disrespectful to law enforcement. Ryder told Fox News Digital that he was "taken aback" by the remarks, emphasizing the dedication and professionalism of his officers. He further noted that it was his first time testifying before Congress and he was eager to share his insights on the challenges posed by the migrant crisis.

During the hearing, Goldman reportedly interrupted law enforcement officials who were providing testimony, at one point exclaiming, "It’s my time, sir," to Jonathan Thompson, executive director of the National Sheriffs’ Association. Subcommittee Chairman Anthony D’Esposito, who represents Nassau County, highlighted Goldman's substantial wealth and ownership of a summer home in the county, suggesting that Goldman benefits from the protection provided by the very officers he appeared to dismiss.

D’Esposito criticized Goldman's comments, calling him a "partisan hack" and praising the work of Nassau County law enforcement. Bill Johnson, executive director of the National Association of Police Organizations, also weighed in, suggesting that Goldman consistently finds himself "on the wrong side of the issue" when discussing public safety. Johnson added that Goldman's apparent disinterest in hearing from frontline officers was not surprising.

Ryder expressed his belief that Goldman and other politicians who criticize law enforcement could benefit from observing the professionalism and dedication of Nassau County officers. He highlighted the proactive approach taken by his department in addressing migrant-related issues while maintaining respect and fairness. Ryder also mentioned that Goldman abruptly left the hearing before it concluded, which Ryder considered another sign of disrespect.
