Dolton Mayor Tiffany Henyard Loses Key Election Amid Ongoing Scandals

Created: JANUARY 25, 2025

Dolton, Illinois Mayor Tiffany Henyard suffered a significant political setback Tuesday night, losing the Democratic nomination for Thornton Township supervisor, a position she currently holds. This defeat comes as Henyard faces numerous controversies, including allegations of embezzlement, targeting political rivals, and lavish spending.

Henyard's absence from the ballot stemmed from her failure to field a certified assessor as part of her slate, a requirement for all nominees. Illinois State Senator and Thornton Township Democratic Committeeman Napoleon Harris secured the nomination by a wide margin. A visibly upset Henyard disputed the caucus results, claiming the process was "illegal."

The shift from a primary election to a caucus, a first for Thornton Township's Democratic Party in decades, further fueled the controversy. Harris, who orchestrated the change, defended the decision, citing it as a long-standing tradition in other townships. He also emphasized that voters had a voice in the process.

While Henyard retains the option to run for the supervisor position as a write-in or independent candidate in April, she has not indicated any intention to do so. Instead, she has threatened legal action against those involved in the caucus.

This latest political blow adds to Henyard's mounting troubles. She is currently seeking re-election as Dolton mayor while under investigation for alleged misappropriation of funds and the targeting of political adversaries. A separate investigation led by former Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot revealed a dramatic decline in Dolton's general fund balance, plunging from $5.61 million in 2022 to a deficit of $3.65 million by May 2024. The investigation also uncovered Henyard's use of village credit cards for personal purchases at various retailers, including a staggering $33,000 spent on Amazon in a single day.
