Two New Orleans police officers are recovering and being commended for their swift actions in neutralizing the perpetrator of the January 1st terrorist attack on Bourbon Street. The attack, which claimed the lives of 14 civilians and the attacker, Shamsud-Din Jabbar, unfolded when Jabbar drove a Ford F-150 pickup truck into a New Year's crowd.
According to Eric Hessler, the attorney representing the officers, they were responding to an unrelated call when the attack occurred. They witnessed the vehicle speeding past them and colliding with a crane. Hessler, a former NOPD officer himself, praised their immediate response, stating they acted according to their training in a rapidly evolving and traumatic situation. The officers quickly assessed the situation and, realizing the intentional nature of the crash, engaged the active threat.

Hessler emphasized the officers' heroic actions, highlighting their ability to function as a team despite the chaotic circumstances and the fact that some officers present were from different jurisdictions and had not worked together before. He commended their quick thinking and effective neutralization of the threat.

Street camera footage corroborates the officers' rapid response, showing them running towards the scene as soon as the call came in. Hessler described their actions as "heroic" and "well thought-out," emphasizing the difficult circumstances under which they performed their duties.

The FBI is investigating the attack and believes Jabbar acted alone. Two improvised explosive devices (IEDs) were found in the French Quarter following the attack. Jabbar had previously posted videos on Facebook expressing support for ISIS.

The victims of the attack have been identified. The investigation is ongoing.
