Tragedy at Pennsylvania Hospital: Officer and Gunman Killed in Shooting

A devastating incident unfolded Saturday morning at UPMC Memorial Hospital in York County, Pennsylvania, claiming the lives of a police officer and the gunman. At least five others were injured in the attack, which began around 10:45 a.m.

Authorities swiftly responded to an "active threat" call at the hospital. The gunman, identified as 49-year-old Diogenes Archangel-Ortiz, reportedly entered the intensive care unit armed with a semiautomatic weapon and zip ties. York County District Attorney Tim Barker later revealed that Archangel-Ortiz held a nurse hostage, binding her hands with the zip ties. A doctor, another nurse, and a custodian were also among the injured, along with two police officers.

The fallen officer, Andrew Duarte, was honored by the West York Borough Police Department in a heartfelt Facebook post. The department expressed their profound sorrow, offering condolences to Duarte's family, colleagues, and the wider community. They mourned the loss of a "hero" and a "comrade."

Hospital spokesperson Susan Manko confirmed that no patients were harmed during the ordeal, emphasizing the rapid response of law enforcement in securing the hospital. Manko expressed gratitude for the swift actions of local agencies in containing the situation.

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro confirmed his awareness of the situation and traveled to the hospital. He later shared that he met with Officer Duarte's parents, expressing his deep condolences and acknowledging the officer's life being tragically cut short. Governor Shapiro praised the heroism of law enforcement, first responders, and medical professionals amidst the violence. He also visited two injured officers, commending their bravery and willingness to protect others.

Newly-confirmed FBI Director Kash Patel also acknowledged the tragedy, noting the loss of three law enforcement officers over the weekend, including two officers killed in Virginia Beach. Patel offered condolences and pledged the FBI's support to the affected families and communities.
