Man Sentenced in Arizona Amtrak Drug Smuggling Shootout

Devonte Okeith Mathis, 24, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison followed by five years of supervised release for his role in a deadly 2021 drug smuggling attempt aboard an Amtrak train in Tucson, Arizona. The incident resulted in the death of a DEA agent and Mathis' accomplice.

Mathis pleaded guilty to conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute marijuana and firearms charges. The incident unfolded during a routine contraband check by a regional task force. While officers were detaining Mathis, his accomplice, Darrion Taylor, opened fire, killing DEA Special Agent Michael Garbo and injuring another agent and a police officer. Taylor subsequently barricaded himself in a bathroom and was later found dead.

Mathis admitted knowing Taylor was armed and likely to use the weapons. The sentencing concludes a tragic incident that highlighted the dangers faced by law enforcement in combating drug trafficking.
