Controversy Erupts as Democratic Representatives Oppose Pro-Israel Resolution

Created: JANUARY 24, 2025

A recent House resolution affirming U.S. support for Israel sparked controversy when nine Democratic representatives voted against it. The resolution followed remarks by Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA) characterizing Israel as a "racist state," a comment she later clarified while maintaining her critique of the current Israeli administration. Jayapal ultimately voted in favor of the resolution.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) took to Twitter after Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley listed the names of the nine Democrats who opposed the resolution. Ocasio-Cortez retorted, suggesting alternative descriptions for the list, such as "People in Congress who think apartheid is wrong" or "People in Congress who don’t ignore human rights abuses against Palestinians." The other representatives who voted against the resolution were Jamaal Bowman (D-NY), Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), Ilhan Omar (D-MN), Summer Lee (D-PA), Ayanna Pressley (D-MA), Cori Bush (D-MO), Andre Carson (D-IN), and Delia Ramirez (D-IL). Rep. Betty McCollum (D-MN) voted "present."

Haley's original tweet accused the nine representatives of believing Israel to be racist and vowed to remember their vote. The resolution passed overwhelmingly, 412-9.

Jayapal's initial "racist state" comment drew immediate criticism from both sides of the aisle, with Democratic leaders and over 40 House Democrats issuing statements of condemnation. This prompted Republicans to introduce the resolution.

Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), the sole Palestinian-American member of Congress, echoed the "apartheid" characterization during her floor remarks, criticizing the resolution as an attempt to normalize the violence of apartheid and drawing a parallel to Congress's past support of the South African apartheid regime.

This vote occurred shortly before Israeli President Isaac Herzog's address to a joint session of Congress.
