A devastating car accident in Chamblee, Georgia, claimed the life of 37-year-old realtor Jimmy Chang early Sunday morning. Authorities report that 20-year-old Christian Fernando Irias-Ruiz, allegedly driving under the influence and at excessive speeds, ran a red light around 1:30 a.m., resulting in a fatal collision.
According to local news station WSB-TV, Irias-Ruiz was traveling at approximately 100 mph when his vehicle struck Chang's. A source revealed to Fox News Digital that Irias-Ruiz is an undocumented immigrant from Honduras who had been apprehended by Border Patrol in South Texas around June 2021 and subsequently released. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has reportedly placed a detainer on Irias-Ruiz at the DeKalb County jail.
Irias-Ruiz is currently facing a multitude of charges, including first-degree vehicular homicide, DUI, reckless driving, speeding, and underage possession of alcohol. Police also told WSB-TV that he was driving without insurance, a valid license, and with a suspended registration.
Chang's family and community are grappling with the sudden loss. His brother, Jason Chang, expressed the family's devastation to WSB-TV, stating, "It's devastating for all the family right now, still can’t process that he’s gone. He impacted a lot of lives." A GoFundMe page has been established to support the family, describing Chang as a beloved individual whose unexpected death has left a profound void.
The Asian Real Estate Association of America (AREAA) also paid tribute to Chang, acknowledging his significant contributions to their Atlanta chapter since 2017. They highlighted his unwavering kindness, dedication, and unique leadership style.
Three other individuals, including two passengers in Irias-Ruiz's vehicle and the driver of a third car, were also injured in the crash and transported to the hospital. The Chamblee Police Department is continuing to investigate the incident.
