Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, the weapons supervisor on the film "Rust," will not undergo drug testing as she faces charges of involuntary manslaughter and evidence tampering related to the on-set shooting death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. A New Mexico judge dismissed the prosecution's request for the drug test, deeming it an "ambush" tactic. Prosecutors allege Gutierrez-Reed transferred narcotics to another individual immediately after the October 2021 incident to evade legal repercussions. They also suggest she may have been hungover on the day a live round was loaded into the gun Alec Baldwin fired. Gutierrez-Reed's defense attorney, Jason Bowles, countered these claims, asserting they lack evidence. The origin of the live rounds on set remains a mystery, though prosecutors hint at Gutierrez-Reed's potential involvement. This recent hearing marked the first appearance for Gutierrez-Reed on the evidence tampering charge, which carries a maximum 18-month prison sentence. She has not yet entered a plea. The involuntary manslaughter charge against Baldwin, who maintained the gun fired accidentally after following instructions, was dropped in April. Evidentiary hearings are scheduled for August to determine the case's progression towards trial. Despite the charges, Gutierrez-Reed retains access to firearms for self-defense, a point of concern for prosecutors. Gutierrez-Reed's legal team accuses the prosecution of employing "character assassination" to bolster their involuntary manslaughter case. Filming for "Rust" has recommenced in Montana, with Matthew Hutchins, the cinematographer's widower, serving as executive producer. Director Joel Souza returned to the project to honor Hutchins' memory.
