Created: JANUARY 24, 2025

Following a serious incident where a 10-year-old boy was ejected from a carnival ride, the "Moby Dick" attraction has been impounded as part of a criminal investigation in Antioch, Illinois. The incident occurred on Sunday at the Taste of Antioch carnival. Antioch Police Chief Geoffrey Guttschow confirmed that authorities secured the ride after inspections by the Illinois Department of Labor. The investigation will determine if criminal negligence or recklessness played a role in the accident.

The ride, owned and operated by All Around Amusement of Lockport, Illinois, had been inspected and permitted earlier this year. The boy was thrown from the ride, which uses shoulder restraints and increases in speed and vertical movement, around 2:40 p.m. on Sunday. He sustained serious injuries, including facial fractures and a severe leg injury, requiring airlift to a Chicago hospital and subsequent surgery.

While the police are respecting the family's privacy regarding the boy's condition, they acknowledged his long road to recovery. The Antioch community has rallied to support the family, with several businesses, including Antioch Pizza Shop, Family Heirloom Antiques, and The Latte Café and Bakery, donating portions of their sales.
