Created: JANUARY 25, 2025

Former FBI informant Alexander Smirnov has entered into a plea agreement with Special Counsel David Weiss, pleading guilty to charges of creating false records in a federal investigation and tax evasion. Smirnov admitted to providing fabricated information to the FBI concerning an elected official who served in the Obama-Biden administration and the official's son. While not explicitly named, the individuals in question are believed to be President Joe Biden and his son, Hunter Biden.

Smirnov's plea agreement includes a statement of facts corroborating the allegations against him. He falsely claimed Burisma executives confessed to hiring the son of the former official for protection and paying both individuals millions of dollars. However, Smirnov’s statement of facts clarifies that his interactions with Burisma occurred in 2017, after the official left office and the Ukrainian Prosecutor General had been dismissed, rendering the alleged bribery scheme implausible.

The statement of facts highlights that Smirnov concocted the bribery narrative after expressing prejudice against the former official and their presidential candidacy. Smirnov had served as a confidential human source for the FBI.
