A tragic incident unfolded in Indianapolis on Monday, resulting in the death of a Marion County Sheriff's Deputy during an attempted jailbreak. Deputy John Durm, a nearly 40-year veteran of the force, was attacked by an inmate, Orlando Mitchell, within the detention center's sally port as Mitchell was being returned from a hospital visit.
Mitchell managed to seize control of the sheriff's transport van and flee the Criminal Justice Center. His escape was short-lived, however, as he crashed the vehicle a short distance away on Prospect Street. Deputies apprehended Mitchell at the crash site. Both Mitchell and Deputy Durm were transported to a local hospital. While Mitchell remains in stable condition, Deputy Durm tragically succumbed to his injuries.

At least one other deputy suffered minor injuries during the apprehension of Mitchell. Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett expressed the city's grief over the loss of Deputy Durm, praising his dedicated service to the community. Sheriff Kerry Forestal shared that Durm's wife and son are also members of the Sheriff's Department, highlighting the profound impact of this loss within the law enforcement community.
Mitchell, already incarcerated on a murder charge related to the death of his son's mother last year, now faces additional charges of homicide upon his release from the hospital. Law enforcement officials have stated that the evidence indicates the attack on Deputy Durm was a deliberate act.

This incident underscores the dangers faced by law enforcement officers in the line of duty. The investigation continues as authorities work to piece together the full sequence of events.
