A somber cloud hangs over a south Florida community following the tragic death of a sheriff's deputy during a routine traffic stop on Sunday afternoon. Corporal Elio Diaz of the Charlotte County Sheriff's Office was fatally shot while conducting a stop at a Chevron gas station in Charlotte Harbor, across from the Sunseeker Resort.

The incident unfolded when Deputy Diaz stopped a white pickup truck. The suspect, identified as 24-year-old Andrew Mostyn Jr., allegedly fired a rifle at Deputy Diaz, who was later pronounced dead at a local hospital. Following the shooting, Mostyn fled the scene, triggering an extensive manhunt. He was eventually located at a Popeyes restaurant in Punta Gorda. Upon encountering law enforcement, Mostyn reportedly reached for his rifle again, leading a deputy to shoot him. Mostyn was airlifted to a hospital but succumbed to his injuries.

Sheriff Bill Prummell, visibly shaken, addressed reporters Sunday night, remembering Deputy Diaz as a dedicated officer, a devoted family man, and a cherished friend. Diaz, an 11-year veteran of the force, was recognized as the department's top law enforcement officer in the first quarter of November 2023. State officials, including Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody and Senator Rick Scott, expressed their condolences and offered prayers for the deputy's family and colleagues.

This tragic incident marks a devastating loss for the Charlotte County community, especially during the holiday season.
