Kyler Murray Embraces Low QB Ranking as Motivation for Comeback Season

Created: JANUARY 27, 2025

Despite a mixed first four years in the NFL and a recent low ranking by CBS Sports, Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray appears unfazed and even motivated by the doubters. The 2019 No. 1 draft pick landed in tier 6 of a 7-tier quarterback ranking system, a group labeled "No Clue, Man." Murray's response on Twitter was simply, "I love it," suggesting he's using the criticism as fuel for the upcoming season.

Murray's NFL career has been marked by both flashes of brilliance and setbacks. He's thrown for at least 20 touchdowns in each season except for the injury-shortened 2022 season, earning him Rookie of the Year honors in 2019 and Pro Bowl selections in 2020 and 2021. However, injuries have been a recurring issue, culminating in an ACL tear last season that required surgery and sidelined him for the final six games. The recovery timeline remains uncertain, but the Cardinals' new coaching staff, led by Jonathan Gannon, is reportedly taking a cautious approach to minimize the risk of re-injury.

Kyler Murray warms up

Before his injury last season, Murray threw for 2,368 yards, 14 touchdowns, and 7 interceptions in 11 games. The Cardinals underwent significant changes in the offseason, parting ways with head coach Kliff Kingsbury and general manager Steve Keim. Now, it's up to Gannon and his staff to help Murray reach his full potential and lead the Cardinals back to contention. The team opens the 2023 season against the Washington Commanders on September 10th.
