A man from Indiana, previously pardoned by former President Trump for his participation in the January 6th Capitol riot, was fatally shot during a traffic stop. The incident occurred in Jasper County, Indiana, when a sheriff's deputy initiated a traffic stop involving Matthew Huttle. According to the Indiana State Police, Huttle resisted arrest, leading to an altercation where the officer discharged their weapon. Huttle was reportedly armed at the time of the incident.
Sheriff Patrick Williamson of Jasper County confirmed the officer is on administrative leave while the Indiana State Police conduct an independent investigation. The sheriff has pledged transparency and will release the officer's name once authorized by investigators. He also offered condolences to Huttle's family.
Huttle's involvement in the January 6th events consisted of being on Capitol grounds for several hours and inside the building for roughly ten minutes, per FBI records. He had received a presidential pardon for his role in the riot. His original sentence included six months in federal prison followed by a year of supervised release.
The investigation's findings will be presented to the Jasper County Prosecutor's Office for review.
