DeSantis vs. Trump: A Fundraising Showdown in the 2024 GOP Race

Created: JANUARY 25, 2025

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis's recent fundraising figures have sparked a flurry of analysis in the unfolding 2024 Republican presidential primary. While DeSantis outraised former President Donald Trump's main campaign committee during the initial six weeks of his campaign, the financial landscape becomes more complex when considering all fundraising avenues.

DeSantis garnered an impressive $20.1 million between his late May announcement and the end of June, surpassing the $17.7 million raised by Trump's primary campaign committee during the entire second quarter. However, Trump's team emphasizes a combined total of approximately $35 million when factoring in contributions to his Save America political action committee.

This fundraising battle unfolds against the backdrop of contrasting campaign strategies and voter demographics. DeSantis's initial haul included a substantial $8.2 million within the first 24 hours, largely from larger donors. Conversely, Trump's fundraising strength lies significantly in small-dollar contributions from a broader base.

Expenditure rates also differ, with DeSantis's campaign spending $7.9 million in six weeks compared to Trump's $9.1 million over the full quarter. Both candidates benefit from substantial support from affiliated super PACs, adding another layer to the financial dynamics of the race. The pro-DeSantis super PAC, Never Back Down, reportedly amassed $130 million, including a significant transfer from a Florida political committee. Meanwhile, Trump's main super PAC, MAGA Inc., has yet to disclose its second-quarter figures.

DeSantis, facing a barrage of negative press, maintains that Republican voters are discerning and will recognize media bias. He also highlighted outraising President Biden's campaign during the second quarter, although Biden's combined efforts with the Democratic National Committee yielded a significantly higher total. This financial competition reflects the broader struggle for momentum and support as the 2024 race intensifies.
