During a campaign stop in Eagle Pass, Texas, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis revealed his comprehensive strategy for securing the U.S.-Mexico border. A cornerstone of his plan involves granting state and local law enforcement agencies greater authority to enforce immigration laws, including the power to deport migrants. DeSantis argues that this measure is justified when the federal government falls short in its duty.
DeSantis declared, "On January 20, 2025, our mission will be to halt the invasion at our southern border, combat the drug cartels endangering our citizens, construct the border wall, and restore our nation's sovereignty. We're done with empty promises and slogans. It's time for action, no excuses. We will accomplish this goal." This border security proposal marks the first official policy rollout of DeSantis's presidential campaign.

The Governor has been a vocal critic of the Biden administration's handling of the border situation, citing the record-breaking influx of migrants in recent times. His plan includes terminating the "catch and release" policy, which permits migrants to remain in the U.S. pending asylum hearings, and reinstating the "Remain in Mexico" policy.

Should he win the presidency, DeSantis pledged to immediately declare the border crisis a national emergency and hold Mexican drug cartels responsible. He emphasized his commitment to addressing illegal immigration, referencing his actions as governor, such as sending migrants to Martha's Vineyard and California.

The Democratic National Committee responded critically to DeSantis's plan, accusing him of using children and families as political pawns. DNC spokesperson Ammar Moussa characterized the plan as a rehash of Trump-era policies that damaged the immigration system.
