Danny DeVito, renowned for his portrayal of the irascible Louie De Palma in the hit sitcom "Taxi," revealed a daring move he pulled during his audition that almost cost him the role but ultimately secured his place in television history.
In a recent interview with AARP, the 80-year-old actor discussed his early career and his approach to auditions. He shared that he always went for any role that interested him, regardless of the physical descriptions provided. This unconventional approach led him to the audition for "Taxi."

Upon entering the audition room, DeVito, script in hand, boldly questioned the writers, asking, "Who wrote this s---?" before tossing the script onto the table. He recounted a brief moment of panic, wondering if he had sabotaged his chances. However, his audacious move had the opposite effect, leaving the casting team in stitches. DeVito explained, "They fell on the floor. Louie walked into their lives. The rest is history." This brazen act, it seems, perfectly embodied the character of Louie De Palma, paving the way for DeVito's iconic performance.

The role of Louie De Palma proved to be DeVito's breakthrough, earning him a Golden Globe in 1980 and an Emmy in 1981. He received three Golden Globe nominations and four Emmy nominations for his portrayal of the grumpy dispatcher. This success catapulted him to movie stardom, featuring in films like "Ruthless People," "Twins," "Batman Returns," "Get Shorty," and "Matilda."

DeVito also enjoyed a long run on the FX comedy "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" from 2007 to 2023. Despite his continued work in the industry, DeVito emphasizes the importance of family. He expressed immense joy at becoming a grandfather, with both of his daughters recently having children. He shared his philosophy of cherishing every moment with his family and encouraging his children to do the same.

DeVito has three children—Lucy, Grace, and Jacob—with his estranged wife, "Cheers" star Rhea Perlman. The couple met in 1971, and Perlman even had a recurring role as DeVito's girlfriend on "Taxi." They also shared the screen in the film "Matilda." Recently, DeVito collaborated with his daughter Lucy on the movie "A Sudden Case of Christmas," a project he described as a heartwarming film suitable for the whole family.
