Nine progressive House Democrats, often referred to as "The Squad", voted against a resolution affirming that Israel is not a racist or apartheid state. This vote occurred just days after Rep. Pramila Jayapal faced criticism for calling Israel a "racist state." The resolution passed overwhelmingly with a 412-9 vote, with one additional Democrat voting "present."

The dissenting Democrats include Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Jamaal Bowman, Rashida Tlaib, Ilhan Omar, Summer Lee, Ayanna Pressley, Cori Bush, Andre Carson, and Delia Ramirez. Rep. Tlaib, the sole Palestinian-American member of Congress, strongly criticized the resolution, comparing it to past Congressional support for the South African apartheid regime.

The resolution's sponsor, Rep. August Pfluger (R-Texas), expressed disappointment with the Democrats who voted against it, linking their stance to support for antisemitism. While Rep. Jayapal ultimately voted in favor of the resolution and retracted her earlier statement, she maintained her criticism of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's administration.

This vote comes a day before Israeli President Isaac Herzog's scheduled address to a joint meeting of Congress, an event intended to celebrate 75 years of U.S.-Israeli relations. Reps. Omar and Ocasio-Cortez are expected to boycott the address. The incident has further highlighted divisions within the Democratic party regarding Israel, while unifying Republicans in their condemnation of the progressive wing's criticisms.
