Key Tour de France support rider Wout van Aert has withdrawn from the race to be with his wife, Sarah, as they await the birth of their second child. The Belgian cyclist, known for his versatility and ability to excel in various terrains, played a vital role in bolstering team leader Jonas Vingegaard's efforts throughout the competition. However, with Vingegaard holding a commanding lead in the general classification and only one challenging mountain stage remaining, Van Aert's continued presence was deemed less critical.

In a video released by his Jumbo-Visma team before Stage 18, Van Aert explained, "With Sarah's pregnancy progressing, things are becoming more urgent at home. After discussions with the team, we've decided that my place is now with my family." He acknowledged the unusual circumstances of his departure, stating, "It's a unique situation, but it's not a difficult decision."

Vingegaard, the current champion, significantly extended his lead over Tadej Pogacar in the crucial Alpine stage on Wednesday, creating a 7-minute, 35-second gap. This substantial advantage positions him as the clear favorite to secure his second Tour de France victory, assuming no unforeseen incidents occur.

Despite having nine Tour de France stage wins to his name, Van Aert hasn't achieved a stage victory in this year's race. Reflecting on his performance, he commented, "I've felt strong enough to win a stage on several occasions, but it hasn't materialized. Nevertheless, I'll always remember this Tour as the one where I connected with my family every day."
