Retired Green Bay Packers legend Clay Matthews is dedicating his time off the gridiron to promoting firearm safety and passing on his hunting traditions to his children. Nominated for Colt's Safety Impact Award, Matthews champions Project ChildSafe, a non-profit organization providing free firearm safety resources, including gun locks and safes, and collaborating with law enforcement agencies.
As a father of three young children, Matthews emphasizes the importance of firearm safety education. He highlighted Project ChildSafe's comprehensive approach, stating, "This was a natural fit to work with Colt...to promote this education of firearm safety." He encourages fans to vote for his chosen charity, as Colt will donate $1 (up to $10,000) to the winner's organization for every vote cast.
Matthews is instilling a love for hunting in his children, with his oldest son eager to deer hunt and his younger child anticipating turkey season. He stresses responsible gun ownership, sharing his practices: "First is have them locked up at all times...My kids...understand dad's in charge of that. You don’t have free rein." He emphasizes teaching children about safe gun handling from an early age, including keeping fingers off the trigger and being mindful of where the barrel is pointed.
Matthews credits his upbringing for his responsible approach to firearms, stating, "My father did a fantastic job with me...when I got out there, there was a responsibility that I felt I had growing up in that environment, and hopefully my kids will have the same." He plans to take his son for target practice soon, further nurturing his passion for the outdoors and responsible firearm use.
