During Tuesday's Senate Armed Services Committee hearing, Senator Joni Ernst (R-IA) directly questioned Pete Hegseth, President Trump's nominee for Secretary of Defense, on several crucial military matters. Ernst, a committee member, had previously reserved public endorsement of Hegseth's nomination.
Ernst's pointed inquiries focused on three key areas: a Department of Defense audit, the role of women in combat, and addressing sexual assault within the military. Regarding women in combat roles, Ernst asked Hegseth for a clear commitment to supporting their continued service. Hegseth responded affirmatively, emphasizing the importance of maintaining high standards and reviewing existing protocols to ensure they haven't been compromised.

The Iowa senator, known for her forthright approach, stated in her opening remarks that she would be "pulling no punches." She pressed Hegseth on his commitment to appointing a senior official dedicated to preventing and responding to sexual assault, a topic she has championed alongside Senator Gillibrand. Hegseth confirmed he would make such an appointment, echoing their prior discussions.

Ernst's initial hesitation to endorse Hegseth came amidst reported pressure from Trump loyalists. A prominent Trump ally had warned that opposing the President's nominees would carry political consequences. However, Ernst ultimately expressed her support for Hegseth last month, advocating for a fair hearing based on factual information.
Ernst's questioning followed similar lines of inquiry from Democratic Senators Shaheen and Gillibrand, who also grilled Hegseth about his stance on women in the military. They challenged Hegseth on past remarks that seemingly questioned the competence of women in the armed forces. Hegseth clarified his position, emphasizing his focus on maintaining rigorous standards for combat roles and expressing his commitment to serving alongside individuals of all backgrounds united by a common purpose.

Hegseth, a former National Guard officer and Fox News host, was nominated by Trump in November. Trump touted Hegseth's potential to restore American military strength.
