A tragic accident at Bangkok's Don Mueang International Airport resulted in a 57-year-old woman's leg being amputated after it became trapped in a moving walkway. The incident occurred in Terminal 2 as the woman was preparing to board a flight to Nakhon Si Thammarat province. Airport officials confirmed that a medical team was forced to amputate her left leg above the knee.
Airport Director Karun Thanakuljeerapat expressed his profound condolences and assured the public that measures would be taken to prevent similar incidents. He confirmed the airport's full responsibility for the woman's medical expenses and their willingness to negotiate further compensation. While the initial medical team believed reattachment was impossible, the woman requested a transfer to another hospital for a second opinion.
Photos circulating online depict the lower portion of the woman's leg trapped beneath the walkway's belt, with airport staff providing assistance. A nearby suitcase was missing two wheels, and the protective comb-like plates at the walkway's end were broken. While the suitcase wheels were later discovered beneath the belt, their connection to the accident remains unclear.
Thanakuljeerapat stated that the walkway undergoes daily checks and monthly inspections. Following the incident, the walkway, manufactured by Hitachi and installed in 1996, was closed for investigation by engineers. The airport director mentioned plans to request funding for a newer model in 2025. This incident follows a 2019 event where a passenger's shoe was damaged by the same airport's moving walkway in Terminal 1. In that instance, the walkway was reportedly repaired and reopened within an hour.
