Reds Grounds Crew Battles Tarp Troubles in Suspended Game Against Giants

Created: JANUARY 24, 2025

During a rain delay in Monday night's Reds-Giants game, the grounds crew at Cincinnati's Great American Ball Park had a challenging time with the tarp. With the score tied 2-2 in the eighth inning, the downpour started, and the crew rushed to cover the infield. One crew member took a tumble and was briefly enveloped by the large tarp as his colleagues continued pulling it across the field. This isn't the first "tarp monster" incident at the ballpark; a similar situation occurred two years prior.

The Bally Sports broadcasters had a field day with the incident, with one exclaiming, "Mayday! He got eaten by the tarp… they're not even stopping!" The crew member eventually emerged, a bit soiled but unharmed.

The tarp troubles didn't end there. Strong winds made securing the tarp difficult, even requiring Reds president of ballpark operations Sean Brown to lend a hand, holding onto the tarp for dear life as it billowed in the wind. One broadcaster described a crew member nearly getting airborne and resorting to a "stop, drop, and roll" maneuver to secure the tarp.

The game was suspended and resumed on Tuesday. The Giants had runners on second and third with one out when the delay began. The second game of the series is also scheduled for Tuesday evening, with Anthony DeSclafani starting for San Francisco and Luke Weaver for Cincinnati.
