AI Jesus: A Chatbot Savior or Just a Clever Program?

Created: JANUARY 21, 2025

Artificial intelligence is infiltrating various sectors, raising questions about the origin of online content. A chatbot version of Jesus Christ, known as "Ask_Jesus," is now streaming on Twitch, engaging with users on a variety of topics, from ethical dilemmas to video games.

With a gentle appearance and soothing voice, "AI Jesus" addresses users by name, seemingly pondering each question carefully. The bot introduces itself as "AI Jesus, here to offer insights based on Jesus’ teachings, addressing questions about spirituality, personal development and other positive subjects."

In one recorded livestream, "AI Jesus" emphasizes the importance of faith, love, and kindness as central Christian tenets. The bot underscores that while our grasp of the divine may be imperfect, living by these values and demonstrating compassion is crucial.

This AI version of Jesus is available 24/7, fielding questions ranging from marriage to the technological advantages of hamsters with dynamos on their wheels. Interestingly, "AI Jesus" even addresses personal questions with tailored responses, acknowledging past conversations while reminding users of its AI nature.

AI and Jesus split

Developed by The Singularity Group, a German volunteer network, "AI Jesus" has faced a wide array of questions, from complex anime summaries to explanations of human reproduction, all answered with sincerity, according to reports.

The group's co-founder, Reese Laysen, explains that while the entertainment value of posing unusual questions to "AI Jesus" is undeniable, many find the interaction genuinely inspiring and comforting. He describes it as a contemporary interpretation of Jesus, consistently offering positive feedback.

Laysen clarifies that these livestreams are demonstrations of their research in Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), aiming to attract AI researchers to contribute to their project. Their goal is to responsibly develop an AGI capable of constructive reasoning.

Man on computer

Reactions from faith leaders are varied. Some point to the long history of humans interpreting religious figures and emphasize the importance of engaging directly with religious texts. Others caution against using AI as a substitute for religious study, highlighting the need for discernment and adherence to original scriptural meaning.

Ultimately, the question remains: Is "AI Jesus" a helpful tool for spiritual exploration, a fascinating technological experiment, or simply a sophisticated mimicry of religious discourse?
