Created: JANUARY 05, 2025

Following a meeting with President Donald Trump that he described as "regrettable," Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed his commitment to pursuing peace under Trump's leadership. In a detailed statement shared on social media, Zelenskyy conveyed his willingness to negotiate and "make things right" after the meeting didn't unfold as expected.

Zelenskyy emphasized his team's readiness to collaborate with President Trump and outlined potential initial steps towards peace, including prisoner releases and a truce encompassing missiles, drones, and attacks on civilian infrastructure, both on land and at sea, contingent on reciprocal action from Russia. He expressed hope for swift progress through subsequent stages, working alongside the U.S. to achieve a comprehensive peace agreement.

Acknowledging America's support for Ukraine's sovereignty, Zelenskyy expressed gratitude for past assistance, particularly the provision of Javelins. He reiterated Ukraine's readiness to sign a security and minerals agreement, viewing it as a pathway to enhanced security guarantees.

The statement followed National Security Advisor Mike Waltz's criticism of the clash between Zelenskyy and Trump, urging Zelenskyy to express regret and a willingness to engage in peace talks. The proposed de-escalation aligns with suggestions from European leaders, including U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron, who advocated for a 30-day freeze on strikes to facilitate broader peace negotiations.

Shortly after Zelenskyy's statement, President Trump temporarily suspended aid to Ukraine, pending a demonstrated commitment to good-faith peace negotiations from Ukrainian leadership. A senior administration official clarified that this was a pause, not a permanent termination, with orders being implemented immediately.
