Wisconsin Governor's Gender-Neutral Language Proposal Sparks Heated Debate

Created: JANUARY 05, 2025

A recent proposal by Wisconsin's Democratic Governor Tony Evers to eliminate gendered terms from state legislation has ignited a fiery discussion about the potential impact on family structures and society. The proposal, part of Evers' 2025-2027 budget recommendation, suggests replacing terms like "mother" with "inseminated person" in the context of IVF procedures and "paternity" with "parentage." Other proposed changes include swapping "wife" and "husband" for "spouse," and replacing "father" with "parent." These proposed changes have drawn both criticism and support, with some arguing they undermine traditional family values while others see them as necessary steps towards inclusivity.

Critics like Jay Richards, director of the DeVos Center for Life, Religion and Family, view the proposal as an "ideological campaign." Richards contends that language shapes our understanding of reality, and removing gendered language could obscure the understanding of sex and marriage, particularly for young people. He questions the motivation behind such changes, arguing that if they weren't significant, there wouldn't be a push for them. Richards further asserts that this move aims to "erase language that would refer to the reality of sex" and could lead to confusion about marriage among younger generations. He expresses particular concern about the rise of gender ideology and its potential to create discomfort and alienation from one's biological sex among children.

Conversely, Laura Dunn, a civil and victims' rights attorney, welcomes the proposed changes. She believes they acknowledge the increasing freedom of gender expression among younger generations, particularly in the face of societal pressures. Dunn argues that maintaining the "gender binary" often overlooks the discrimination, harassment, and abuse faced by those who defy traditional gender norms. She emphasizes the importance of self-expression and inclusivity as fundamental freedoms and expresses concern over the current political climate's resistance to these values.

Governor Evers defends his proposal, stating its purpose is to provide legal clarity for families, especially those utilizing IVF, ensuring access to necessary care. He maintains that the changes are purely for legal clarification and not driven by ideological motives.
